Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, and Voice Lessons for All AgesSouth Charlotte, NC
ABOUT OUR LESSONS
Instruments and Costs
We teach guitar, bass, ukulele, beginner piano, and voice. If a student doesn’t have their own instrument, we can manage for the first lesson or two using ours – but practicing at home is important, so you’ll need to buy or rent your own as early as possible! Just ask us at the first lesson if you need advice.
OPTION 1: Students can pay by the lesson at a rate of $30 per half hour.
OPTION 2: Students can reserve the same lesson time each week, and pay monthly. Our current monthly rates are $105/month for half hour weekly lessons, or $200/month for hour lessons.
The monthly option requires a one-month initial deposit (refunded in full as long as student is paid up at time of cancellation).
TYPES OF LESSONS
GUITAR LESSONS, BASS LESSONS, AND SINGING LESSON INFO
Our music lessons are private, one-on-one sessions held once per week out of our home, with public recitals held several times per year. No regular group classes are currently available, but group performance opportunities do happen — and they’re a blast! We teach all ages, but generally find best results with kids at least seven or older.
Lessons can be done in half hour or hour timeslots. Most kids under 12 do best with half hour lessons, while adults and teens can make faster progress with hour lessons. We strive to tailor songs and exercises to students’ skill level and musical tastes, and we often ask students to suggest their own songs. That way, students have fun and learn at the right pace for them, using a combination of current pop culture and tried-and-true learning techniques.
STUDENT RECITAL INFO
Recital performances are not required, but we HIGHLY encourage all our students to participate and play live as often as possible! We host several recitals and performance opportunities a year, at various locations in the Charlotte area. These are as formal or edgy as you want them to be – we’ve featured everything from Beethoven, to Disney, to Metallica! Recital fees are $30 per student.
MAKEUPS & VACATIONS
Students can reschedule lessons as often as necessary, as long as they give at least 24 hours’ notice. (Lessons missed or cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice cannot be made up!) When teachers need to cancel a lesson, we offer the option to either reschedule the lesson, or receive a credit for that lesson on the next bill.

Some months have an extra 5th lesson, which results in four or five free lessons each year, so we balance those out by taking four paid vacation weeks:
- Spring Break week (CMS school calendar)
- July 4th week
- Thanksgiving week
- Christmas week
During those weeks, there will be no regular lessons, but the monthly rate will stay the same. (If a paid vacation week falls within a student’s first month with us, they will not be asked to pay for that missed lesson.)
NOTE: Paid vacations only apply to students paying monthly! Students paying for individual lessons don’t get those extra free lessons, so they will not be expected to pay for paid vacation weeks.
BILLING & INVOICES
Invoices for our weekly lessons go out in email on the first of each month and are due by the 15th, with a 10% late fee applied to payments not received by the 16th. No contracts required, and no registration fees!
We do accept credit cards, and we can set up automatic monthly payments to keep things easy.
About Our School
We actually have two teaching locations: the original Sense & Color School of Music, serving students in Cedar Park and northwest Austin, TX, and a second location in North Carolina, serving students in south Charlotte, Pineville, Ballantyne, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, and Matthews, NC.
NOTE: Mike and Amy Boyd, the school owners, founded and grew Sense & Color while living in Austin, then moved to Charlotte NC in 2014 with their three children to be closer to family. We may expand again in Charlotte in the future, but for now, this location offers a more down-home feel, with lessons taught by Mike and Amy Boyd out of our home. When you study with us, you’re family!
What Makes Us Different
We don’t just want students to play music, but to love music! Our instructors are professional gigging musicians who are constantly pushing their own musical horizons, and finding new things in music to get excited about — a goal that we strive to pass on to our students. Gauging by the number of our students who go on to join school bands, youth bands, and their own musical groups as guitarists, bassists, and singers, we think it works!
Our History (TX)
In 2008, Michael & Amy Boyd began offering guitar, bass, and vocal lessons in a spare bedroom of their Cedar Park home. Over the next two years, their lesson schedule filled! When they couldn’t take any more students, two more teachers joined in. It was soon clear we’d either need a separate school, or a much bigger house! In June of 2012, the school moved into its current location in the heart of Cedar Park, and since then, expanded to nine instruments and up to a dozen music teachers, as well as additional staff in scheduling and accounting. We’ve been featured twice in the Community Impact newspaper as the Cedar Park Business of the Month, and we’ve been a sponsor of several local CP churches and the Henry Middle School Band, as well as played numerous LISD school festivals and community events. Community is everything!
