Sense & Color School of Music

ABOUT OUR LESSONS

Instruments and Costs

We teach guitar, bass, piano, violin, viola, drums, ukulele, and voice. If a student doesn’t have their own instrument, we can manage for the first lesson or two using ours – but practicing at home is important, so you’ll need to buy or rent your own as early as possible! Just ask your teacher at the first lesson if you need advice. We don’t rent instruments to students through the school, but Rock and Roll Rentals is great for guitars, amps, and drums – and for violin, try Strait Music. In lessons, we use electronic drums and full-sized electronic keyboards to keep volumes manageable.

At the bottom of this page, you can explore our teachers to pick the right fit for you!

RATES

OPTION 1: Students can pay by the lesson, booked online, at a rate of $27 per half hour for any instrument or teacher.

OPTION 2: Students can reserve the same lesson time each week for a semester at a time, and pay monthly. The monthly rates vary depending on the teacher. Our current rates (last updated July 2016) are:

  • Josh, Megan, Julia, or Tracy: $115/month for 30 mins, $220/month for 60 mins
  • Alan, Allysa, or Nathan: $110/month for 30 mins, or $210/month for 60 mins
  • Chris or Matt: $105/month for 30 mins, or $200/month for 60 mins

The monthly option requires a one-month initial deposit (refunded in full as long as student is paid up at time of cancellation).

TYPES OF LESSONS

Our music lessons are private, one-on-one sessions held once per week at our school, with public recitals held several times per year. No regular group classes are currently available, but band camps and other group performance opportunities do happen periodically — and they’re a blast! We teach all ages, but generally find best results with kids at least seven or older.

Lessons can be done in half hour or hour timeslots. Most kids under 12 do best with half hour lessons, while adults and teens can make faster progress with hour lessons. Our curriculum varies by teacher, but we strive across the board to tailor songs and exercises to students’ skill level and musical tastes, and we often ask students to suggest their own songs. That way, students have fun and learn at the right pace for them, using a combination of current pop culture and tried-and-true learning techniques.

RECITALS

Recital performances are not required, but we HIGHLY encourage all our students to participate and play live as often as possible! We host several recitals and performance opportunities a year, most of them at the Life Church in the same business park as our school. These are as formal or edgy as you want them to be – we’ve featured everything from Beethoven, to Disney, to Metallica! Recital fees are $25 per student.

MAKEUPS & VACATIONS

Students are allowed to reschedule lessons, using our online system, as long as they give 24 hours’ notice. (Lessons missed or cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice cannot be made up!) When teachers need to cancel a lesson, we offer the option to either reschedule, or receive a credit for that lesson on the next bill.

HOW TO RESCHEDULE LESSONS USING THE ONLINE SYSTEM

PAID VACATION

Some months have an extra 5th lesson, which results in four or five free lessons each year, so we balance those out by taking four paid vacation weeks:

  • Spring Break week (Leander ISD calendar)
  • July 4th week
  • Thanksgiving week
  • Christmas week

During those weeks, there will be no regular lessons, but the monthly rate will stay the same. (If a paid vacation week falls within a student’s first month with us, they will not be asked to pay for that missed lesson.)

NOTE: Paid vacations only apply to students paying monthly! Students paying for individual lessons online are not getting those extra free lessons, so they will not be expected to pay for paid vacation weeks.

BILLING & INVOICES

If your schedule is flexible, we recommend the online booking system, since it’s slightly cheaper and there are no deposits, invoices, or late fees to worry about. Just pick a lesson time that works for you, pay for it, and you’re done! However, if you prefer to keep a specific time and teacher reserved for you each week, you’ll want to go for the monthly invoicing option, payable at the beginning each month.

Invoices go out in email and are due by the 15th, with a 10% late fee applied to payments not received by the 16th. No contracts required! For detailed info on invoices, deposits, automatic monthly payments, etc, it’s all here:

About Our School

snc-newsfull-24

We’re a family-run studio offering private music lessons in guitar, bass, ukulele, voice, drums, violin, viola, and piano. We actually have two teaching locations: the original school, serving students in Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, Jonestown and northwest Austin, TX, and a second smaller location in North Carolina, serving students in south Charlotte, Pineville, Ballantyne, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, and Matthews, NC.

What Makes Us Different

We don’t just want students to play music, but to love music! Our instructors are professional gigging musicians who are constantly pushing their own musical horizons, and finding new things in music to get excited about — a goal that we strive to pass on to our students. Gauging by the number of our students who go on to join school bands, youth bands, and their own musical groups, we think it works!

Our History

In 2008, Michael & Amy Boyd began offering guitar, bass, and voice lessons in a spare bedroom of their Cedar Park home. Over the next two years, their lesson schedule filled! When they couldn’t take any more students, two more teachers joined in. It was soon clear we’d either need a separate school, or a much bigger house! In June of 2012, the school moved into its current location in the heart of Cedar Park, and since then, expanded to nine instruments and up to a dozen music teachers, as well as additional staff in scheduling and accounting. We’ve been featured twice in the Community Impact newspaper as the Cedar Park Business of the Month, and we’ve been a sponsor of several local CP churches and the Henry Middle School Band, as well as played numerous LISD school festivals and community events. Community is everything!

“My teenage daughter takes guitar and voice lessons here and LOVES it! The instructors really make the lessons personal by teaching the genres she likes and they introduce her to music that is new to her that she really enjoys.”
